General Class Policies:
  • You must pre-register for all classes! Make sure to register early as these classes fill up quickly! All class fees are due at the time of registration. You can pre-register by phone at (301) 891-2323 or via email at sabeads@erols.com.
  • In the event a class is canceled due to lack of enrollment, students will be notified and will be given the option of a full refund or taking the class at a later date.
  • Only paying students are allowed to attend classes -- NO EXCEPTIONS !
  • Please notify instructor of any special accommodations; health wise or any other that you might require. Our store staff cannot provide child care. Please do not bring your children to class.
  • REFUNDS POLICY: No refunds will be given. Classes may be rescheduled up to a week before the class date.
  • Use any of our thousands of beads for your own special creations. If you decide to purchase what you make - and probably you will - or if you want to stock up on beads, tools, books or jewelry, we offer a 10% discount for all purchases made during class hours.
  • Beading is addictive: there are no fixed material costs. A set of basic tools generally costs up to $35. A completed necklace and pair of earrings can range from $30 and up, depending on the beads.

 
   

Fundamentals of Bead Stringing I: Create Your Own Earrings & Necklaces

Tuition: $30 for a 2 hour class.
Limit 5 Students per Class

Learn to work with the basic tools of bead stringing -- needle nose pliers, bead design boards, clasps, crimps, ear wires, eye and head pins, & much much more!

  • For two hours our bead shop is yours! Use any of our thousands of beads to learn the basic skills and make your own special creations! Just remember that small beads take more time!
  • Participants range in age from 9 to 90 and come to class with a wide array of craft skills and experience. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced beader eager to to brush up on basic techniques, we will work with you to create beautiful and distinctive beaded jewelry.

Estimated Materials Costs:

  • There are no fixed materials costs -- you only pay for what you decide to take home.
  • During the class, feel free to use any of our thousands of beads to make your own special creation at no charge.
  • We offer a 10% discount on all purchases made during class hours.
  • A set of basic beading tools generally costs about $35, including:
        • Basics of Beadstringing Book -- $8.95
        • 1 pair Round Nose Pliers -- $7.50
        • 1 pair Needle Nose Pliers -- $7.50
        • 1 Bead Design Board -- $6.95
  • A complete necklace & earring set will range in price from $30 on up.
  • Students usually leave class with a completed necklace and earring set.
Fundamentals of Bead Stringing II: Concept & Design

Tuition: $40 for a 2 hour class.
Limit 5 Students per Class
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Bead Stringing or previous beading experience.

  • Learn fundamental design concepts and put them into practice! Use the thousands of beads in our store to create your own signature pieces.
  • Learn measurement, basic knotting to add suppleness and simplicity, design styles, finishing tips, and other techniques.
  • Students should come to class with a strand of beads to work with.

Estimated Materials Costs:

  • Use of our materials to practice with is free. If you want to keep what you make, all purchases the day of the class are 10% off.

Intermediate Beading

Tuition: $50 for a 3 hour class
Limit 5 students per class
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Bead Stringing or previous beading experience.

  • For 3 hours you will learn to create original designs. The class emphasizes intermediate design themes and jewelry construction techniques.
  • Students should come to class with a project or design theme in mind. (Feel free to talk with S&A Beads' instructors prior to class for ideas.)

Beginning Metal Wire Wrapping

Tuition: $45 for a 2 hour class
Limit 5 students per class
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Bead Stringing or previous beading experience.

  • Learn to create original designs with base metal wire before moving on to precious metals.
  • Learn chain linking and open link designs for earrings and dangle wire wrapping.
  • This class is great for those who would like to practice and build on the earring wrapping skills they learned in Fundamentals of Bead Stringing I.

  • We encourage you to bring any project pieces you may have to wire wrap.

Metal Wire Wrapping II

Tuition: $45 for a 2 hour class
Limit 5 students per class
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Bead Stringing or previous beading experience.

  • This class is fun and creative. Express your design ideas through free style wire wrapping stones, organic shapes, arrow heads and objects alike.
  • Wire wrapping is one of the loveliest ways of converting that beautiful stone, shell, or other special small object into jewelry.
  • Learn to even design your own rings with precious metal wiring.

Private Beading Class

Tuition: $60 for a 2 hour class / Additional time $30 per hour
Limit 1 student per class
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Bead Stringing I & II or previous beading experience.

  • This class is for the person who is not afraid to take on a complex design challenge but is not sure how to achieve it. Individuals who prefer one on one attention.
  • Our teachers, (among the finest jewelry and bead designers in the region) are your guides, let them help you realize your vision.
  • Student must have had previous classes and have a project you need guidance and design ideas with.

Altar Building 101: Basic Elements of Creating Your Own Sacred Space

Tuition: $100 for a 3 hour class
Limit 6 students per class

Most of us build altars, special places in our homes and work sites, dedicated to the things we love and believe in. Sometimes it's a simple array of family photos, or a trophy case, or a collection of shells. Sometimes the spiritual story is more complex. Our teacher, Dietra Montague has been studying and practicing altar building customs of peoples around the world for many years. Her work adorns many homes and such venues as the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.

  • Adorn yourself and your space spiritually. In this workshop Ms. Monague will help you to honor through art and design what you love and revere.
  • Learn how to use stones and objects to create special places that express the uniqueness of your own spirit.
  • Learn to create your own space that will resonate with the sounds and visions of your higher self using color and crystals to convey meanings.
  • For this class students must bring 3 personal items (small copies of photos, air looms, mementos, etc.)

Seasonal Holiday Altar Building

Tuition: $100 for a 3 hour class
Limit 6 students per class

Learn from a master of many traditions Dietra Montague, to create a special holiday altar that honors your family's special traditions.

  • Christmas Crèche's, Hanukah Menorahs, Kwanza Tables; whatever your spirit leads you to will be enhanced and deepened by the design skills and artistic sensibilities honed in this workshop.

Prayer Beads from Malas to Rosaries

Tuition: $50 for a 3 hour class
Limit 5 students per class
Prerequisite: Intermediate Bead Stringing or previous beading experience

The word "bead" comes from an ancient word meaning "prayer". Nearly every religion in the world uses strings of beads in its rituals. Some call them Malas, some call them Rosaries, but whatever you call them, strings of prayer beads help bring our eyes and hands into the service of our spirits. Healing arts expert Therese Robinson will guide you through the meanings of stones, colors, and shapes to help achieve your spiritual goals.

  • Learn how to make and design your own prayer beads. Understand how stones, charms, and other embellishments can enhance your designs and the spiritual and mechanical foundations of your own strand of prayer beads.
