We love these heavy, old, octagonal brass and silver colored beads from Northern Africa. The brass beads in particular are think and rather heavy. The silver (which is a base metal concoction) beads are considerably lighter, and probably have a high tin or aluminum content.
Each bead is decorated with incised lines creating intricate little patterns. The holes are large, and the beads are somewhat crudely made -- with no two beads being exactly alike. While there are definitely older examples of these beads available, it's a little hard to determine whether or not these beads are still being made today -- but it wouldn't shock us. We have also heard these beads referred to as "Pun Tribe" beads -- but it's hard to trace exactly where they originated. Still, these are really great beads and are personal favorites of several of our staff. Beads measure approximately 16 mm long x 11 mm in diameter. Price: $4.00 |
