Very unusual vertebrae Mala from Nepal -- most likely Yak bone. With this type of item, it is impossible to determine the exact age, although it seems like it is a prayer necklace that was most likely used in Nepal or Tibet, and not made for the jewelry trade. The white fossil shell beads appear old, while the center tassel bead is plastic. Overall, we guess the necklace is between 20 and 60 years old. The turquoise beads are not especially old, though they are quite nice. One of the leather tassels has turquoise and coral inlaid into the ends, while the other one is all coral. Overall, this is a great necklace or mala for someone interested in a truly unique set of beads either to wear or for use as a prayer necklace.
The necklace measures 21 inches long, not including the three inch tassel. Individual Yak vertebrae measure between 16 mm and 19 mm long.
