Octagon Indian Coin Silver Ganesh Pendant

Ganesh6

This beautiful Indian silver pendant was handmade approximately 100 years ago. The work is just lovely, featuring a picture of Ganesh. The pendant has a silver backing (which adds a little to the weight of the piece as well as the cost). Overall, the piece has a great feel to it and a lovely patina. The pendant measures 2 inches high (not including the bail) by 2 inches wide, and weighs 22.3 grams.

The most common source of silver in 19th and early 20th century Indian silver work was old silver coins, which are approximately 80% silver, and that is what this pendant is made out of. This pendant was made in the Repousse technique, which is a metalworking technique in which thin sheets of malleable metal are ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.

According to Wikipedia, Ganesh, or Ganesha, as he is also known:

Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honoured at the start of rituals and ceremonies. Ganesha is also invoked as patron of letters and learning during writing sessions.
