Medium Sized Indian Coin Silver 4-Armed Goddess Pendant

T2015-Indian14

This beautiful Indian silver pendant was handmade approximately 100 years ago. The work is just lovely, featuring an unidentified Hindu god or goddess. The work is quite bold, featuring a four-armed goddess holding a trident in one hand, a cup in another, and an hour-glass or sheaf of wheat in another.  Very cool pendant!  The pendant measures slightly under 2 inches high by 1.25 inches wide. The pendant weighs 11.7 grams.

The most common source of silver in 19th and early 20th century Indian silver work was old silver coins, which are approximately 80% silver, and that is what this pendant is made out of. This pendant was made in the Repousse technique, which is a metalworking technique in which thin sheets of malleable metal are ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.  The pendant has a solid silver backing.
